Shakedown, Massachusetts style

As you may have read on The Daily Fix, I had a few things to say about the Boston blinking cartoons fiasco last week.
The comedy of errors continues. In today's Boston Globe, the lead story covers a $2M settlement TBS will make with Boston and other assorted local governments and agencies. Here's the thing: $1M covers the costs of "responding" to the threat; the other $1M is "'goodwill' money," i.e. extortion.
Worse, TBS not only had to apologize, but had to wipe the egg from politician faces by "admitting" that Boston's response was warranted: "We understand now that in today's post-Sept. 11 environment, etc. etc. etc."
Hardly a week goes by without the Globe running an article or column about Boston's desire to be perceived as a "world-class" city. Oh, Boston is gathering perceptions alright, but I think worldwide sentiment is more likely to place us closer to Podunk than Paris.
